Common Core: Beyond the Basics - ELA
Audience: Teachers and Teacher Mentors
Take a look at this sample ELA question for fourth graders, a question which could be challenging even for some high school students:
Write or revise one or more paragraphs demonstrating ability to state opinions about topics or sources: set a context, organize ideas, develop supporting evidence/reasons and elaboration, or develop a conclusion appropriate to purpose and audience.
That's going to require a fundamental shift in how reading and writing are taught at the daily level. In the ELA portion of the Common Core: Beyond the Basics regional conference, teachers and instructional leaders will learn how to design lessons that build student ELA skills at the CCSS level, focusing on:
- Unpacking the CCSS ELA standards and understanding what students need to know
- Creating CCSS-aligned ELA learning goals and tracking student progress
- Best practices for introducing new ELA concepts, skills, and procedures, such as:
- Comprehension of key ideas and details
- Development of ideas
- Written expression organization
- Clarity of language
- Deepening student knowledge with ELA tasks involving reasoning, organization, and expression
- Building strategies for taking students to the cognitively complex CCSS level with tasks involving writing in real-world contexts and scenarios
